Mellie pushed her hair out of her eyes and gazed around with terrified curiosity. Her mother had to work that day and Daddy was home with Josh who had the flu. So Mellie was on her own. In her pocket she had her school supply list and a bag of money.
Born and raised in the muggle world, Mellie knew wizarding society only as the place where her mother worked and the source of a set of Grandparents who despised her father. So she'd been shocked to learn that she could be a part of it too. Shocked and frightened of course because that was how Mellie felt about most things. Her one consolation was her mother promise that Hogwarts would be full of wonderful scenes and people to sketch.
Hogwarts. Just the word sounded threatening. A conjurer of images brimming with lightening framed towers and suits of armor that watched your every move. And Gryffindor? Mother said her old House was for the brave and smart. Which Mellie wasn't. What if she didn't belong anywhere? Would they send her home? Lock her away?
"Buck up, Mels," the girl chided herself. "There's got to be some nice kids there." Ignoring the little voice in her head that queried What if there's not?, Mellie tightened her brunette pigtails and consulted her list. Firstly, she needed a wand...
