Family History
The O'Connor line is an old Irish pure-blood line. It traces back to the witch Morrigan, who has long since gone down in Celtic mythology as goddess of battle, strife, and fertility. They also hold close ties to the Banshees ((this is actually backed up in real life by some Irish mythology that tells us banshees appear to announce the coming death of members of only a few select families, one of which is the O'Connor line)). The O'Connors are one of the most powerful Irish wizarding families, however their influence pales in comparison to that of families such as the Malfoys. Maeve's mother also descends from an Irish pure-blood line, the Niamh line, however, its origins are obscure and they hold little to no influence among pureblood circles (in fact, it could almost be said that it was dying out and its remaining members absorbed into other, larger, lines). Both families, however, pay (or have paid) allegiance to all the Dark Lords in history that have sought to bring power to pure-bloods, thereby reinstating the natural order of things.
Character History
Maeve's mother, Cassandra Niamh, was married to her father, Donovan O'Connor, in an arranged marriage that Cassandra's parents hoped would bring some prestige to the Niamh family. However, soon after Maeve's birth, Donovan O'Connor eloped with a muggle woman, leaving his wife and daughter behind. This caused a large scandal among pure-blood circles, and soon, Cassandra was shunned and her daughter with her. This led to Maeve growing up in isolation in a large castle on the Irish coast that was, in actuality, far too huge for its few inhabitants. There, she was taken care of by a nanny while her mother mostly locked herself up in one of her rooms. As is customary for proper pure-blood families, her nanny spent hours teaching Maeve manners and proper conduct appropriate for a witch from such a distinguished family as her own. As soon as she was old enough to be let out by herself (or to sneak out successfully), Maeve spent large amounts of time roaming the cliffs and forests along the coast, wishing to get away. Initially, her mother wished to tutor her at home in the confines of the castle. Maeve, however, was determined to prove her place among the witches and wizards of her generation and restore her honor as pure-blood witch. So, when her Hogwarts letter arrived she was not to be stopped.
Character Personality
Maeve is highly intelligent, often using her cunning to manipulate people. Intelligence is also the quality she admires most in others. She is high-strung, easily provoked, and prone to fits of temper. She does not trust people, and tends to hide behind a hostile mask. Her aggressive nature prevents her from having many friends, but this makes no difference to her as she much prefers to concentrate and work on her own. All of this makes her highly independent as well as confident. Her ambitions are set high - no matter what circles, whether good or bad, she eventually ends up in, she is determined to be counted among the most powerful. In order to achieve this goal, she is willing to do whatever it takes - even grovel at someone's feet occasionally.
